I have been hooked on Weber's books since finding the 3rd of the Honor Harrington series。 When I first saw into the dark, I was not so certain I would like it, but discovered, I liked it better than all the other books he had written。 Seeing this, I was beyond happy。 I enjoyed every moment of reading this。 The characters are great。 The plot is fascinating, complex enough for me to take notes。 The final scene, however, had me laughing out loud。 I refuse to give spoilers, but oh it was so very wor I have been hooked on Weber's books since finding the 3rd of the Honor Harrington series。 When I first saw into the dark, I was not so certain I would like it, but discovered, I liked it better than all the other books he had written。 Seeing this, I was beyond happy。 I enjoyed every moment of reading this。 The characters are great。 The plot is fascinating, complex enough for me to take notes。 The final scene, however, had me laughing out loud。 I refuse to give spoilers, but oh it was so very worth the read。 I will wait anxiously for book three。。。。 because with that ending, there must be a book three! 。。。more

Creative, ain’t we? I was very impressed by how the author took the human fascination with innovation and creativity along with our overly-developed tendency toward factionalism and shook them together to show what the human race could do with lots of motivation (hoo boy, so much motivation…) and some interesting new toys to play with。 Human history seems to suggest that us creative hairless bipeds could really turn the galaxy on its ears, and the Puppies gave our heroes much incentive…。

Well。 A lot of times second books in a series are letdowns。 Not so much 'Into the Light' by David Weber。 After stopping an alien invasion in the first book, the second focuses on rebuilding the Earth by applying the alien technology the Earth acquired in their victory。 There are a lot of scenes and a lot of characters。 It is kind of a rehash of Earth's societal and governmental problems as they confront this new reality。 Not as interesting as an alien invasion。 But。David Weber intersperses the E Well。 A lot of times second books in a series are letdowns。 Not so much 'Into the Light' by David Weber。 After stopping an alien invasion in the first book, the second focuses on rebuilding the Earth by applying the alien technology the Earth acquired in their victory。 There are a lot of scenes and a lot of characters。 It is kind of a rehash of Earth's societal and governmental problems as they confront this new reality。 Not as interesting as an alien invasion。 But。David Weber intersperses the Earth scenes with scenes as two Earthlings head to the aliens' planet in a captured dreadnought。 Very interesting dialogue takes place as these characters explore some unrevealed background from the previous book。Then there are scenes from another planet, another alien species。 They were the next on the first aliens hit-list。 They intended to conscript them as warriors。 Meanwhile, they are plotting alien politics among themselves。Earth finally figures out how to make a starship, and then they make it faster。 Then they visit these aliens。 It's like a reprise from the first book, only Earthlings are negotiating, not invading。There's much more, but that's enough to give you the flavor。 If you like David Weber's military scifi (Safehold, Honor Harrington), you'll like this。 。。。more

Started out as a good follow on to Out of the Dark however, the inclusion of multiple Polish words and conversations was too distracting。 Weber used the same Polish language technique in one of the Saganami Island books。 Fortunately it was a library book, so I just returned it without finishing。 In this case, I just gave up as not worth the effort to try to guess the meaning without losing track of the story。

Not a short novel by any standards。 But a well written story。 Tale of human interstellar travel and first contact with alien species on their home planet。 This is second book in series。 Need to read first book to get up to speed in this one faster。 Action, intrigue, hard core SF al in a great story。

Humans are too stubborn to conquer, and determined to survive the inevitable next attempt。 They must unite and build strength--which involves a lot of politics that I didn't always find interesting, but overall the conflict kept my attention, especially the end section。 The end is a bit of a surprise, and doesn't seem easy to fix。 Humans are too stubborn to conquer, and determined to survive the inevitable next attempt。 They must unite and build strength--which involves a lot of politics that I didn't always find interesting, but overall the conflict kept my attention, especially the end section。 The end is a bit of a surprise, and doesn't seem easy to fix。 。。。more

A fun and enjoyable sequel。 The aliens felt alien enough but not incomprehensible。

Feels like there are two books material into this one。 But the unpopular twist in the first book is lessened and the explanation hinted at but still not fully explained。 All and all miles ahead and looking forward to more 。。。 but since the ten years passed between the first and second book I am not holding my breath like a weak breather。

A decade ago David Weber wrote a fun tale of alien invasion and Earth coming Out of the Dark (paper) with the help of vampires。 Now with the help of Chris Kennedy he continues the tale Into the Light (hard from Tor)。 Some of the vampires take the Shongairi ships, which travel six times the speed of light, to the Shongairi home world。 That’s a journey of forty years。 Meanwhile humanity, with the help of the Galactic Hegemony database, first recovers from the distruction and nuclear winter。 Then e A decade ago David Weber wrote a fun tale of alien invasion and Earth coming Out of the Dark (paper) with the help of vampires。 Now with the help of Chris Kennedy he continues the tale Into the Light (hard from Tor)。 Some of the vampires take the Shongairi ships, which travel six times the speed of light, to the Shongairi home world。 That’s a journey of forty years。 Meanwhile humanity, with the help of the Galactic Hegemony database, first recovers from the distruction and nuclear winter。 Then engineers discover that the Hegemony is very risk averse and hasn’t improved their technology for millennia。 Fortunately there are a lot of improvements。 Then a ship is sent to a world with 1920's technology to get allies。 Lots of fun, and I suspect that sequels are planned。Review printed by Philadelphia Free Press 。。。more

It is not the book you expected going from the first。It is a fine book depicting the progress of a post-alien invasion world trying to rebuild itself, and deciphering alien technology to secure themselves。 However, it is not a sequel to the previous one。 There is lip service to the original ending of the first, in a total of TWO entire chapters。 That's it。 And while it is an enjoyable, well-written tale, it's not what you wanted out of a sequel from the original Out of the Dark。In addition, ther It is not the book you expected going from the first。It is a fine book depicting the progress of a post-alien invasion world trying to rebuild itself, and deciphering alien technology to secure themselves。 However, it is not a sequel to the previous one。 There is lip service to the original ending of the first, in a total of TWO entire chapters。 That's it。 And while it is an enjoyable, well-written tale, it's not what you wanted out of a sequel from the original Out of the Dark。In addition, there's two different books & stories in there。 I'm avoiding spoilering the difference, but it's definitively not something I'd expected either。 I would have rather read two completely separate books, each revolving around their setting。 As it is, it feels like two different writers merging two novels into one, which might (or might not) be the case。The abysmally low rating of 3-stars for a David Weber book reflects these - imho, very pronounced - flaws。 The technique is top-notch, but the way it's applied isn't what I wanted out of that book。 。。。more

Here is a book about the aftermath。 The aftermath of an alien race that almost destroys the earth and exterminates about two-thirds of the population of the world。 It is the story of the determination, vision and ascendancy of humanity in their determination of not just to stay alive but to work to become the best race in the universe so that Planet Earth will not be destroyed once again by Hegemony。

Earl Baugh

A good follow on。 However, it tries to cover a LOT of time, people and development。 It felt a little rushed and a bit over packed。 It was an enjoyable read, but wasn’t as good as the first because of this。

Unique and captivating alien invasion。 For some it will be too long in the tooth, but if one suspends disbelief for faster than light travel and aliens。。。it will be worth it。 Now when can we expect the next book?

Ian Denner

Not impressedWow! What a letdown。 I could not wait to start this book after the excellent first book, but what a yawn fest。 After all the action and excitement found in the first one, and the major surprise that there are vampires among us this one was lucky to get even 2 stars。 The best part of the book was the ending which possibly set up the following book for hopefully an lot more aliens and action。

I'm leaning towards 3。5 stars。 I found it entertaining but it dragged into parts but the action at the end made up for that。 Looking forward to the next book。 I'm leaning towards 3。5 stars。 I found it entertaining but it dragged into parts but the action at the end made up for that。 Looking forward to the next book。 。。。more

This is a bridge book。 It’s really split into 2 stories, the rebuilding of earth after the Shongairi defeat and reaching out to a new world。 I kept feeling like there was more just around the corner and it never came。 I may revise my review based on the next book, but right now this disappointed。

This book is the sequel to "Out of the Dark"。 To get the full effect, you might want to read that book first to understand why they call the invading aliens "Puppies"。 It is because they look like dogs。 This is also a vampire-like book。 No one drinks blood, but there is a lot of violence。 Just so you know。The story: After kicking the "Puppies" (Shongairi) off the Earth, it is obvious that Earth needs to unite and get ready for another wave of invasion。 Luckily, humans managed to keep most of the This book is the sequel to "Out of the Dark"。 To get the full effect, you might want to read that book first to understand why they call the invading aliens "Puppies"。 It is because they look like dogs。 This is also a vampire-like book。 No one drinks blood, but there is a lot of violence。 Just so you know。The story: After kicking the "Puppies" (Shongairi) off the Earth, it is obvious that Earth needs to unite and get ready for another wave of invasion。 Luckily, humans managed to keep most of the alien manufacturing and the education headsets that allow almost anyone (around 90% of people) to be instantly made an expert at almost anything。 Meanwhile a delegation, led by Vlad the Impalor, is headed for the "Puppies's" home world to get a little payback for murdering 75% of the human race。 And finally, Earth sends delegations out to other star systems to rally support against the Galactic Hegemony who sent the "Puppies" to enslave us in the first place。Any problems with this story? It seemed to go on and on about various ways to rebuild a society。 Frankly, it felt somewhat like the Safehold series beginning with Off Armageddon Reef。 Also the story spent an inordinate amount of time dealing with the process of seeking allies amongst other star systems。 Finally, there seemed to be more violence than was strictly necessary。Any modesty issues? The F-word was used quite a bit。 There was also a scene where women appeared in postage-stamp-sized bathing suits。 Overall this was a great story, but it was clear from the ending that this is becoming much more than a two-book series。 In fact, the ending was almost a cliffhanger。 I am dying to read the next book in the series (whenever that comes out)。 。。。more

Solid follow up to the first book, which I reread since it’s been years。 I’d forgotten how long it took to get to the reveal in the previous book。 I’d still rather focus on vampires in space, and we still only get a tease of that, but I’d keep reading into the future。 There’s nothing amazing here in concept (we do get a good explanation for vampirism) or execution but it was a good way to spend a couple of hours in world fucked up in a different way to our own, so not a lot of triggers。 Sometime Solid follow up to the first book, which I reread since it’s been years。 I’d forgotten how long it took to get to the reveal in the previous book。 I’d still rather focus on vampires in space, and we still only get a tease of that, but I’d keep reading into the future。 There’s nothing amazing here in concept (we do get a good explanation for vampirism) or execution but it was a good way to spend a couple of hours in world fucked up in a different way to our own, so not a lot of triggers。 Sometimes you actually want a reliable 3 star book/series。 。。。more

A good and thoughtful follow up to "Into the Dark", this book asks the logical question: what happens after Earth defeats the aliens? In this case, we use their technology and improve things from there。 Can the Human race come together even when faced with a known common enemy? Can they find allies in space who were also on the Hegemony's hit list and convince everyone to work together against an upcoming threat? And can we learn the secret and surprising origins of Vlad Tepes' vampirism? Well that was disappointing。 Book 1 was delightful。 Extreamly silly。 A guilty pleasure。 Fun。 This? Not so much。It is very much a set up for the next bit。 The action is disjointed。 There is far too much weapons porn。 Made up fantasy weapons porn at that。 Weber then that way at the best of times。 This was excessively excessive。 Really really boring。 I want a story, not a weapons masters guide for the RPG。Hard book to finish。
